Canada announces support for Iranian temporary residents

Canada is dedicated to protecting Iranians who are already in the country and to assisting Iranian families in remaining together. Given the Iranian regime’s severe and systemic human rights breaches during its ruthless assault on protesters, some may want to stay in Canada rather than return home at this time.

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, announced new measures to assist Iranian temporary residents in Canada on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

”Beginning March 1, 2023, these measures will make it easier for Iranians to extend their temporary status in Canada and to transition between temporary streams, allowing Iranians to continue studying, working, or visiting family by applying for a new permit from within Canada. An open work permit track will also be made available to Iranians who are currently in Canada. Applications from Iranians living in Canada will also be prioritised.

Furthermore, the Canadian government is waiving certain processing fees for Iranians who want to prolong their stay in Canada, as well as passport and permanent resident travel document fees for Canadian citizens and permanent residents in Iran who want to depart.

Canada is still looking into reforms to other programmes, such as the Human Rights Defenders stream, which is one of the few in the world with a dedicated, permanent immigration programme for those who protect and promote human rights.
These actions build on our prior actions against the Iranian regime’s gross oppression of the freedoms and human rights of the Iranian people.
