Ontario is to contribute an additional $25 million over the next three years, in addition to the $15 million announced in Budget 2022. The investment aims to address labor shortages while also promoting economic growth in Ontario.

The most common destination for newcomers to Canada is Ontario. In 2021, almost half of all new immigrants arrived in Ontario, with the majority hoping to settle in Toronto. The federal government has proposed a plan to double the number of economic immigrants chosen by the province to 18,000 by 2025.

In addition to pledging an additional $25 million to recruit more talented employees, the province intends to spend an additional $3 million to assist internationally trained immigrants in finding jobs in their areas and obtaining faster access to training and support towards a license or certificate.

Other major initiatives affecting immigrants in Ontario are included in Ontario’s 2023 budget. Ontario, in particular, intends to invest $75 million in the Skills Development Fund over the next three years. This will assist workers and job seekers in acquiring the skills required to find new opportunities and develop their careers. In addition, the government will invest $224 million in a new capital stream of the Skills Development Fund in 2023 and 2024 to expand access to training centers and prepare more employees for careers in the skilled trades and other in-demand jobs.

What exactly is the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program?

The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), is a set of immigration paths that allow foreign individuals to become permanent residents of Canada. The PNP is intentionally designed to attract immigrants who would benefit Ontario, such as skilled employees, workers in industries with labor shortages, entrepreneurs, and investors. The province has many immigration channels grouped into three categories:

  • Ontario Human Capital
  • Ontario Employer Job Offer
  • Ontario Entrepreneur

Ontario Human Capital

refers to a variety of immigration streams that seek applicants for Ontario’s labor force. The Human Capital streams highlight talents, abilities, or experiences that indicate a foreign individual would be able to quickly join the Ontario labor force. Those with job or educational experience in Ontario, fluency in both English and French, and competitive Express Entry profiles may find success in one of these streams.

  • Human Capital Priorities – Express Entry
  • French-Speaking Skilled Worker – Express Entry
  • Skilled Trades – Express Entry
  • Masters Graduate
  • Ph.D. Graduate

Ontario Employer Job Offer

Applicants with a valid work offer from an Ontario firm have immigration possibilities through the Ontario firm work offer streams. To be declared genuine, both the employer and the work must meet specific standards. In addition, depending on the application stream, the candidate must meet various qualifying conditions.

  • Foreign Worker
  • International Student with a Job Offer
  • In-Demand Skills

Ontario Entrepreneur

The Entrepreneur Stream in Ontario is intended for rich entrepreneurs interested in making major investments in business growth in Ontario. Entrepreneurs with a demonstrated track record of success can use this program to begin new business ideas in Ontario. If these projects are successful, the applicants will be considered for permanent residence in Canada.
